In life, it’s not about how many times you fall down; it’s about how many times you get back up again. The ability to persevere in the face of adversity, to rise stronger after every setback, is what separates those who succeed from those who falter. But how exactly do we summon the strength to keep going when the going gets tough?
In my new book “Getting Up Again, and Other Stories We Tell Ourselves About Being Strong,” I answer this question from my research and experience on building resilience.

The key lies in understanding the power of resilience—the inner strength that allows us to bounce back from life’s challenges with renewed determination and resilience. Resilience isn’t just a trait that some people are born with; it’s a skill that can be developed and cultivated over time. And like any skill, it requires practice, patience, and perseverance.
So, how can we cultivate resilience in our own lives? Here are a few strategies to help you get back up again, no matter how many times life knocks you down:
1. Embrace Failure as a Learning Opportunity: Instead of viewing failure as the end of the road, see it as a valuable learning experience. Every setback offers an opportunity for growth and self-improvement. Take the time to reflect on what went wrong, identify any lessons learned, and use that knowledge to fuel your future success.
2. Cultivate a Growth Mindset: Adopting a growth mindset is essential for building resilience. Instead of seeing challenges as insurmountable obstacles, view them as opportunities for growth and development. Believe in your ability to learn, adapt, and overcome whatever life throws your way.
3. Practice self-compassion: Be kind to yourself, especially during difficult times. Treat yourself with the same compassion and understanding that you would offer to a friend facing a similar situation. Remember that it’s okay to struggle, and that setbacks are a natural part of the human experience.
4. Seek Support from Others: Don’t be afraid to lean on your support network during tough times. Reach out to friends, family, or a trusted mentor for guidance, encouragement, and support. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and who will lift you up when you’re feeling down.
5. Focus on What You Can Control: When faced with adversity, focus on the things that you can control rather than dwelling on the things that are beyond your control. Channel your energy into taking positive action and making meaningful progress towards your goals.
6. Find Meaning in Adversity: Look for the silver lining in every setback. Ask yourself what you can learn from the experience and how it can help you grow as a person. Find meaning and purpose in adversity, knowing that every challenge you overcome makes you stronger and more resilient.
7. Practice self-care: Take care of your physical, emotional, and mental well-being during difficult times. Make time for activities that nourish your soul, whether it’s exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones. Remember that self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential for building resilience and maintaining your overall well-being.
I know from experience, getting back up again isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it. By cultivating resilience and embracing the challenges that come your way, you can emerge stronger, wiser, and more resilient than ever before. So, no matter how many times life knocks you down, always remember that you have the power to get back up again and to rise stronger than ever before
